Astragalus membranaceus (AM), a herbal remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has immunoregulatory properties.
There is evidence that Astragalus membranaceus can activate macrophages by increasing the concentration of cytokines, including TNF-α and GM-CSF, without cytotoxic effects to modulate the immune response.
The innate immune response during a bacterial infection is accompanied by an intensive migration of macrophages to the site of infection.
In conclusion, Astragalus membranaceus extract can activate macrophages to increase the migration and release of immune response mediators via HPA. Astragalus membranaceus extract may be an effective drug for enhancing host defenses to avoid infections. Further studies are needed to confirm the additional effects and mechanisms of HPA on immune response in Astragalus membranaceus extract-stimulated macrophages.
